Traffic was stopped on the northbound M40 in north Oxfordshire this evening to allow the Highways Agency to recover a sheet of metal from the carriageway.
The recovery led to delays which are now said to be easing between junction 11 at Banbury and junction ten at Ardley.
Queues built up back beyond junction nine at Wendlebury.
Delays caused by an earlier five-car crash on the southbound carriageway at junction nine are said to be easing.
The crash led to the closure of a lane on the southbound exit slip road at junction nine near Wendlebury, causing congestion on the motorway back to junction ten at Ardley.
The A43 is also busy, but moving, both ways between junction ten at the Cherwell Valley Services and the B4100.
